ABOUT
Esther Flatters (she/her) is a certified intimacy coordinator based in the United Kingdom. Coming from a performance background, she gained a BA (Hons) degree from Westminster University. and a plethora of experience in front and behind the camera. Before focusing on her work as an intimacy coordinator, Esther spent the last decade in the industry working in film. In the last five years, she has worked consistently as a costume supervisor, costume standby and stylist. Bringing a special blend of skills from her performance background in movement and academic ventures, some of her BAFTA award winning credits include The Gentlemen, Black Mirror, The Diplomat, Gangs of London with her work featured on Netflix, Amazon Prime, BBC, Channel 4 and Paramount Plus.
Studying under the umbrella of the industry’s world leaders for training intimacy professionals in film and television, her qualification comes from the international organisation, ‘Intimacy Professionals Association’(IPA). They guarantee a thorough and comprehensive education with the newest industry protocols and legislation. This SAG-AFTRA accredited program means Esther has the highest quality training, carving out an industry gold standard for how to shoot scenes of simulated sex, nudity and any sensitive content that may require the careful guidance and support of an intimacy coordinator.
Passionate at deepening her knowledge in this ever changing sphere, Esther understands the importance of continuing her education, particularly in movement related training. She has qualified for fight coordination in Unarmed Stage Combat and movement direction with the British Academy of Stage and Screen Combat (BASSC).
Personal ties with being part of the LGBTQIA+ circle in London has seen Esther working for Torture Garden (the worlds largest fetish club). Her time in this role means she can offer valuable guidance and consultation with kink related content for productions as a speciality.
A big advocate in understanding political activism in racial inequality and sexism, Esther believes not just relying on “safe spaces”, but creating genuine safe structures for people to work and operate in. Esther is able to offer guidance and support in scenes that depict simulated sexual violence, paying close attention to the wellbeing of the actors and crew in this heightened sensitive environment. As such, she is committed to providing concrete and practical tools, enabling people to have open, genuine dialogues, how to have difficult conversations using the non violent communication practices, with an aim to create a thriving workspace. Consent and collaboration are an integral part of Esther’s process as an intimacy coordinator, allowing actors to deliver performances where they feel safe and empowered to do their best work whilst giving the director the opportunity to fulfil their creative vision.
